Stories of Excellence

Person: Johnelle Hunt

Johnelle Hunt, co-founder of J.B. Hunt Transport Services, is a trailblazer in the trucking industry. Born in 1932 in Heber Springs, Arkansas, she started the company with her husband J.B. in 1961. They began with five trucks and seven refrigerated trailers. Through hard work and smart business decisions, they grew the company into one of the largest transportation logistics companies in North America. Johnelle played a crucial role in the company's success, managing the books and office operations. "I never dreamed it would be this big," she once said. After J.B.'s death in 2006, Johnelle became the largest individual shareholder. She's now known for her philanthropy, donating millions to education and healthcare causes in Arkansas.

Key Lessons from Johnelle Hunt:

  • On financial prudence: "We were careful with our money. Every penny counted, especially in the early days."

  • On customer service: "Treat your customers right, and they'll keep coming back. It's as simple as that."

Company: Monster Energy

Monster Energy was founded in 2002 by Rodney Sacks and Hilton Schlosberg, two South African entrepreneurs who acquired Hansen Natural Corporation in 1992. The pair saw an opportunity in the energy drink market dominated by Red Bull. They launched Monster Energy with a bold, edgy brand identity targeting young male consumers. The company's aggressive marketing strategy, focused on extreme sports sponsorships and guerrilla tactics, quickly gained traction. By 2012, Monster had captured 35% of the U.S. energy drink market. In 2015, Coca-Cola acquired a 16.7% stake in Monster Beverage Corporation for $2.15 billion. As of 2025, Monster Energy held a 30.1% share of the American energy drink market, with annual net sales of $7 billion.

Key Lessons from Monster Energy:

  • On marketing: Go where your customers are. Monster focused on sponsoring extreme sports events and athletes rather than traditional advertising. They understood their target audience's interests and immersed the brand in those spaces.

  • On distribution: Leverage partnerships strategically. Monster's distribution deal with Anheuser-Busch in 2006 gave them access to a vast network overnight. Later, switching to Coca-Cola in 2015 provided global reach. These moves accelerated growth without requiring massive infrastructure investment.

How To Find Your Purpose In Life

Insights

William Deresiewicz in his speech delivered to the United States Military at West Point in October 2009:

"Introspection means talking to yourself, and one of the best ways of talking to yourself is by talking to another person. One other person you can trust, one other person to whom you can unfold your soul. One other person you feel safe enough with to allow you to acknowledge things—to acknowledge things to yourself—that you otherwise can’t. Doubts you aren’t supposed to have, questions you aren’t supposed to ask. Feelings or opinions that would get you laughed at by the group or reprimanded by the authorities.

This is what we call thinking out loud, discovering what you believe in the course of articulating it. But it takes just as much time and just as much patience as solitude in the strict sense. And our new electronic world has disrupted it just as violently. Instead of having one or two true friends that we can sit and talk to for three hours at a time, we have 968 “friends” that we never actually talk to; instead we just bounce one-line messages off them a hundred times a day. This is not friendship, this is distraction."

—William Deresiewicz, American author and essayist
